MONMOUTH, Ore. ? Nicci Miller and Rebecca Kielpinski combined for 35 points Saturday as the 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 13 with a 57-39 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.
UAA (15-1, 2-0 GNAC) won with its trademark defense, holding WOU to 33.3 percent shooting, forcing 26 turnovers, and allowing only two field goals in the final 18 minutes.
WOU (6-7, 1-1) was led by 12 points and seven rebounds from forward Katie Torland, but the Wolves could not dig out of an early 31-14 hole.
Despite their advantage in size and depth, the Seawolves could not pull away in the second half, however, allowing the Wolves to creep within 41-32 with just under 13 minutes to play.
Kielpinski then took over, earning a pair of successful free throws and converting a layup to extend the lead back to 13 points. Miller and Kielpinski combined for UAA's next nine points to grab a commanding 55-38 lead at the 5-minute mark.
Kielpinski ? the reigning GNAC Player of the Year ? wound up with 16 points (6-9 FG, 4-6 FT), seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Miller tied her career-high with 19 points (7-12 FG, 3-6 3FG, 2-3 FT). Miller also dished two assists and grabbed three of UAA's 10 steals.
No other Seawolves had more than four points, although 10 different players found the scoring column. Senior Ruby Williams nabbed five rebounds, all on the offensive end.
With 28 minutes played, Kielpinski tied the first of what could be multiple Great Northwest Athletic Conference career records this season, equaling the total-minutes record of WOU's Leada Berkey (2004-08) with 3,247.
Saturday's win over also extended UAA's streak in the series to 10, equaling the Seawolves' second-longest string of success against one opponent.
UAA completes a 3-game road journey next week with a Saturday showdown at arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks. That game tips at 3 p.m. at the Patty Center.
