Yellowjackets sting Seawolves, 69-60

BILLINGS, Mont. ? Seniors Jeremiah Trueman and Kenny Barker combined for 37 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team suffered through a frigid-shooting second half Wednesday as upstart Montana State Billings earned a 69-60 win over the Seawolves at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

UAA (9-10, 3-3 GNAC) also got six points and six assists from sophomore guard Kevin White as it ended a four-game road trip with a 2-2 record.

The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, evened their record at 9-9 overall and moved to 4-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, a year after winning just one game. MSUB was led by 18 points and six assists from guard Mario Burns (10-14 FT), plus 17 points and six rebounds from guard Derrick Wright.

The Seawolves came out red-hot in the first half, sinking 14 of 22 overall (63.6 percent) including 6 of 8 from three-point range, to take a 37-33 lead into the locker room.

UAA got steals on its first three defensive possessions of the second half, but could only cash in for two points, and MSUB would follow with a game-deciding 14-4 run.

Playing their third game in eight days on the road, the Seawolves suffered through perhaps their worst-shooting half of the season, making just 10 of 28 field goals and 2 of 11 from long range in the final stanza.

The Yellowjackets took advantage of a huge free-throw advantage as well, hitting 23 of 31 to UAA's 4 of 7.

Trueman, a 6-9 center from Stratford, New Zealand, finished with team-highs of 20 points (8-14 FG, 1-1 3FG, 3-4 FT) and eight rebounds.

Barker connected for 17 points (7-17 FG, 3-10 3FG) and grabbed five rebounds, but the 6-3 guard from San Diego had his run of consecutive 20-point performances halted at five.

The Seawolves got six points apiece from Kevin White, brother Steve White (2-2 FG, 1-1 3FG) and sophomore guard Lonnie Ridgeway, but was hurt mightily by a rough performance from third-leading scorer and leading rebounder Brandon Walker (13.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg), who went 0 of 3 from the field and didn't grab a board.

UAA returns home for the first time since Jan. 10 when its host rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
