Flyers race past Seawolves in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Junior center Taylor Rohde scored 19 points but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team suffered through another rough second half Saturday in an 84-70 loss to Lewis University at Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Seawolves (0-2) also got 12 points and three assists from point guard Drew Robinson but failed to hold a 10-point halftime lead for the second straight day.

The Flyers (1-1), from Romeoville, Ill., got a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 three-point shooting from senior guard Chris McClellan, plus 19 points and 10 rebounds from center Marty Strus to claim the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Things went the Seawolves' way early as they made 10 of their first 13 shots and claimed a 25-9 lead with 12:10 left in the first half. UAA took a 45-35 lead into halftime before the Flyers responded with three straight three-pointers and a 15-0 run to start the second half.

UAA would never recover as Rohde (5-6 FG, 9-12 FT) became the lone offensive option. Seniors Brandon Walker and Casey Robinson combined for 21 points but neither found the scoring column in the final 20 minutes.

Junior transfers Mario Gill and Matt Peterson chipped in nine points each, however Peterson was the only bench player to score for the Seawolves. The Flyers tallied a 29-9 bench scoring advantage.

UAA will try to bounce back Sunday against West Region rival UC San Diego (2-0) at 12:30 p.m. AST.
