ANCHORAGE (May 8) – Alaska Anchorage men's basketball coach
Cameron Turner has added another accomplished transfer to his 2026-27 roster Friday, announcing that
Joseph Mayberry has signed a scholarship agreement to play for the Seawolves.
The 6-5, 190-pound guard is coming off two successful seasons at junior-college power McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, where he helped his team to a combined 56-8 record and back-to-back NJCAA Region 5 title games.
As a sophomore, the Lancaster, Texas, native averaged 11.0 points on .478 shooting (.787 FT), 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and a 2-to-1 assist/turnover ratio, ranking as the third-leading scorer on an extremely balanced squad that went 29-2. He scored double figures 17 times, including 22 points (8-13 FG) in a win over Western Texas and 15 points in a victory over Eastern Arizona.
"I knew I wanted Joseph to be part of our program once I took the job at UAA," said Turner, who was hired to lead the Seawolves on Mar. 31. "He played under legendary coach Kevin Gill at McLennan, so I knew he was well coached and understood what it takes to win. I coached against him this past season, and he had a phenomenal game. You could tell he was a driving force every time he stepped on the floor. He's the definition of a Swiss Army knife-type player, playing multiple positions and impacting the game in multiple ways. He just knows how to get the job done."
As a freshman, Mayberry posted 8.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, helping the Highlanders finish 27-6. Among his best rookie efforts were 24 points and six rebounds in a 72-67 road win over Lee, and 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a road win over Southwestern Christian.
As a prep star at Lancaster High School, Mayberry helped the Running Tigers to four straight district championships, averaging 13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a senior.
Mayberry becomes the second signee for UAA this spring, joining fellow Dallas-area product
Tarrance Warren (6-2/175, Sr., G, Dallas, Texas, Sam Houston HS/Eastern Arizona College/Barry).
