FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks posted a 30-12 win over
the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in Day 1 of the seventh annual Alaska Nordic Cup
on Friday evening at Birch Hill.
The Nanooks grabbed the top-three positions in both the men's
and women's races for the victory as the races were held in conjunction with
the Goldstream Sports Tour de Ski/Fairbanks.
On the women's side, the Seawolves finished fourth through
sixth in the 2.75K skate (interval start). Junior Steffi Hiemer (7:56.6) led
UAA in fourth, followed by junior Laura Rombach (8:07.0) and rookie Marit Ulsund (8:20.2) in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Scoring for the UAA men's team was a trio of freshmen in the
3K race. Leading the Seawolf pack was Erik Bjornsen (7:19.3) in fourth, Martin Kapšo (7:32.2) in fifth and Lukas Ebner (7:33.3) in sixth.
Junior All-American Jaime Bronga didn't race today due to an
acute stomach pain.
The Seawolves and the Nanooks will face off in Day 2 of the
cup on Saturday with the men's 8K skate and the women's 6K skate at 11 a.m.
