FAIRBANKS – Despite a first-place finish by freshman Erik
Bjornsen, the Alaska Anchorage Nordic team lost to the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks,
25-17 in Day 2 of the Alaska Nordic Cup on Saturday afternoon at Birch Hill.
The UAA men's team recorded nine points in the loss to UAF's
12, while the UAA women posted 8 points to the Nanooks' 13. Alaska Fairbanks
leads the cup overall with 55 points to UAA's 29. The cup was held in conjunction
with the Goldstream Sports Tour de Ski/Fairbanks.
Bjornsen, from Winthrop, Wash., won the men's 8K mass start
race overall, while freshmen Lukas Ebner and Martin Kapšo were fifth and sixth
in the college race, respectively.
On the women's side All-American Jaime Bronga returned to
the lineup after missing Friday's race with an acute stomach pain and led the
Seawolves with a third-place result in the 6K race. Juniors Steffi Hiemer and
Laura Rombach crossed the finish line in fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Seawolves and the Nanooks will compete in the final day
of the cup on Sunday with the 5/10K classic race, starting at 10:30 a.m.
