Walker, Seawolves hobble Huskies

ANCHORAGE - Brandon Walker scored 25 points and fellow senior Casey Robinson added 14 points Friday to lead host Alaska Anchorage to a 74-67 victory over Houston Baptist in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout consolation semifinals at Sullivan Arena.

UAA (2-3) also got 11 points and a team-season-high nine rebounds from junior guard Mario Gill as  the Division II Seawolves earned their 51st all-time victory over a Division I program.

HBU (0-5) was led by 15 points apiece from guards Michael Moss and T.J. Berry.

After falling behind 16-11 after 10 minutes, the Seawolves responded with 13 straight points and outscored the Huskies 20-5 for the remainder of the first half. UAA built its advantage as high as 48-32 and led by 14 points with 7 minutes left before hanging on down the stretch.

A 6-3 guard from Hayward, Calif., Walker shot 10 of 16 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from three-point land, to post his fourth career game of 20 points or more in the Shootout. He also added two assists and tied his career-high with three blocked shots.

Walker's point total moved him past Hansi Gnad (138 pts, 1983-86) into fourth place on the all-time Shootout scoring list. The three-year player now trails only former Seawolves Peter Bullock (213, 2000-03), Ed Kirk (169, 1999-01) and Jason Kaiser (160, 1993-94).

Robinson, meanwhile, nailed 2 of 5 threes, along with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and no turnovers in 35 minutes.

Defensively, the Seawolves drew five charging fouls in the first half and held Great West Conference Player-of-the-Year Andrew Gonzalez to five points on 2-of-9 shooting and six turnovers.

Senior point guard Drew Robinson delivered nine points (6-6 FT) and six assists to help UAA capture at least one Shootout victory for the 27th time in 33 tournaments. The Seawolves are now 31-67 all-time in their flagship event.

With the win, the Seawolves advance to Saturday's 2 p.m. 4th/6th-place game against Ball State, while the Huskies will take on Southern Utah in the 7th-place game at noon.
