Nordic women finish top 15 in freestyle

MIDWAY, Utah – After six events, the Alaska Anchorage ski team sits in fifth place with 485.5 points at the Utah Invitational. Leading the Seawolves Friday in the freestyle race was the women's Nordic squad, posting all three scorers in the top 15.

With two races remaining at Soldier Hollow, UAA trails first-place Colorado (680 points), Utah (670, 2nd), New Mexico (601.5, 3rd) and Denver (557, 4th). Montana State is on the Seawolves' heels with 478 points, while Westminster College, which only fields an Alpine team, will remain in seventh with 254 points.

The women's Nordic team recorded a solid finish with 91 total points. The Seawolves were led by junior Steffi Hiemer (Kruen, Germany), who crossed the finish line at 15 minutes, 3.2 seconds – good for a season-high sixth place in the 5K race. Senior Kelsey Coolidge was clocked at 15:36.5 for 13th, while junior Laura Rombach was 15th at 15:38.6.

Also representing the women's squad were freshmen Marit Ulsund (16th, 15:40.6) and Karina Smith (32nd, 17:16.7).

On the men's side, the freshman trio of Martin Kapšo, Lukas Ebner and Lasse Molgaard-Nielsen were the lone Seawolves to finish the 10K battle. Kapso (27:57.4) paced UAA with an 18th-place showing, while Ebner (27:58.4) and Molegaard-Nielsen (28:09) finished 19th and 21st, respectively.

The Seawolves will compete in the 15/20K classic mass start races on Saturday. The women's race is schedule to commence at 7 a.m. AST, followed by the men's at 9:30 a.m. AST.
