Women march past Urban Knights

ANCHORAGE – Haley Holmstead scored a game-high 26 points Saturday to lead the 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 90-53 victory over Academy of Art in the finale of the 2011 AT&T Hoops Classic.

The Seawolves (7-2) also got 14 points and eight assists from freshman point guard Gritt Ryder as they won their third straight game and took the event's unofficial title.

The Urban Knights (3-4) were led by 10 points and 10 rebounds from forward Alisa Griggs in their first-ever game against UAA.

UAA, which won its 13th straight at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, also got 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists from senior Hanna Johansson, who reached a pair of career milestones. The 6-2 center from Gothenburg, Sweden, scored her 1,000th career point on a layup midway through the first half, and later she moved into the top 10 on UAA's career rebound list, surging up to ninth place with 578.

Johansson was named to the All-Classic Team along with teammate Alysa Horn, who had seven points and six rebounds in Saturday's win. Holmstead – who shot 11 of 19 and scored the most points by a Seawolf this season – was named the event's Most Outstanding Player.

Junior guard Bruna Deichmann scored 11 points, and senior forward Kaylie Robison grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and made a career-high four steals.

The Seawolves are now 6-0 all-time in three AT&T Hoops Classics.

UAA heads south next week to complete its non-conference schedule, taking on Chaminade for a pair of games in Honolulu, Dec. 13-14. The Seawolves will also face NAIA powerhouse St. Xavier on their Hawaii trip on Dec. 19. UAA's next home game is not until a Jan. 5 GNAC clash with Montana State Billings at the WFSC.
