Balanced Seawolves win 9th straight

ANCHORAGE – Center Taylor Rohde scored 17 points and point guard Steve White dished a career-high 10 assists Saturday to lead 20th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to an 85-62 men's basketball victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (9-2, 3-0 GNAC) remained perfect in the early Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule as they shot 59.6 percent (31 of 52) from the field and outrebounded the visitors from Nampa, Idaho, 32-23.

UAA also got 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from Travis Thompson, plus 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from Kyle Fossman as the sophomore guard tandem combined to make 6 of 10 three-pointers. Junior guard Marcus Jackson contributed 10 points, four assists and no turnovers, while fellow reserves Abebe Demissie and Liam Gibcus chipped in eight points apiece.

The Seawolves – who have not lost since Nov. 24 in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout – have now matched the fifth-longest winning streak in program history at nine.

The Crusaders (7-5, 1-3) got 15 points each from starting guards Anthony Golden and Keith Moilanen as they took 29 of their 51 total shots from behind the three-point arc.

White got the Seawolves off to a quick 7-3 lead with assists on his team's first two baskets, and UAA pulled away midway through the half with a 17-5 spurt. First-year NNU head coach Dave Daniels was whistled for a technical foul with his team trailing 28-18 at the 6:24 mark, and UAA took all of the momentum at that point, earning a 44-24 lead at the break. The Seawolves started the second half with a 9-0 run to erase all doubt.

White, a senior from Manly, Australia, topped his previous career-high of nine assists and committed just two turnovers in 26 minutes. He also added seven points on perfect shooting (2-2 FG, 3-3 FT) and came one rebound shy of his career-best with six.

Demissie had a game-high three steals for the Seawolves, who must now play nine of their final 15 games on the road. That stretch begins next week at Montana State Billings (Thur., Jan. 5, 5 pm AST) and fellow GNAC co-favorite Seattle Pacific (Sat., Jan. 7, 6 pm AST).
