Trio claims All-America honors at NCAAs

STOWE, VT – Led by All-America finishes by freshman Erik Bjornsen and juniors Jaime Bronga and Laura Rombach on Friday, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves are seventh following Day 2 of the 58th annual NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by the University of Vermont at Trapp Family Lodge.

The Seawolves have combined for 408.5 points at the completion of six events, just half a point behind sixth-place and defending champion Denver (409) and 42 points behind Vermont (5th, 451.5). The Colorado Buffalos continue to lead the 21 teams with 647 points, while Utah (562.5), Dartmouth (500) and New Mexico (492) round out the top four.

Bjornsen and Bronga earned First Team All-America honors, finishing runner-up and third, respectively in the classic races, while Rombach claimed Second Team All-America honors for her 9th-place showing.

A local of Winthrop, Wash., Bjornsen was runner-up in the 20K classic race with a time of one hour, five minutes, 35.7 seconds – his first All-America honor. Making his NCAA debut, Bjornsen was just 4.3 seconds behind first-place Ried Pletcher of CU.

Classmate Lukas Ebner , who just missed All-America honors Wednesday in the freestyle with an 11th-place finish, was clocked at 1:06.51.4, good for 13th place. Combined with Brjornsen's points, the duo finished the classic in fourth with 74 points – very respectable with only two of the max three competitors.

On the women's cross country course, Bronga, from Anchorage, posted her second All-America award in the championships and third of her career. After racing to seventh in the 5K freestyle on March 9, Bronga picked up her first NCAA podium result with a time of 54:09.6 in the 15K classic.

Rombach, a native of Neukirch, Germany, recorded UAA's fifth All-America honor of the week with a ninth-place result at 55:00.6. Also scoring for the Seawolves was fellow German, Steffi Hiemer . Making her second NCAA appearance, Hiemer finished 22nd with a time of 57:13.0.

The junior trio tallied 93 points in the classic for third behind Utah (116) and CU (115).

The 2011 NCAA Skiing Championships will conclude tomorrow with the men's and women's slalom races at Stowe Mountain Resort. Sophomore Andreas Adde will look to defend his slalom title when the Seawolves hit the slopes at 5 a.m. Alaska time.
