#18 Men hold off Yellowjackets, 80-72

BILLINGS, Mont. – Taylor Rohde had 25 points and nine rebounds Thursday to help lead 18th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to an 80-72 victory over Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (10-2, 4-0 GNAC) also got 16 points from sophomore guard Travis Thompson as they ran their winning streak to 10 games and won their 2011-12 road debut.

The Yellowjackets (7-6, 2-3) were led by 18 points from guard David Arnold, who was 11 of 12 from the free-throw line.

Trailing 14-13 early, UAA went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good, and Thompson converted a backcourt steal into a layup to make it a 39-32 advantage at halftime.

The Seawolves then scored the first seven points after the break and led for double digits for much of the way until a late Yellowjacket run. MSUB's Emery Henning hit a pair of free throws at the 2:31 mark to make it 71-67 and the hosts stole the ball back, however Antoine Proctor missed a three-pointer that would have made it a one-possession game.

Leading 73-69 a few moments later, Rohde took a feed from Kyle Fossman and converted a three-point play at the 1:10 mark. The Seawolves then clinched it from the free-throw line, making 4 of 6 charities to end the game.

Thompson had another efficient outing, shooting 4 of 5 from the field (2-3 3FGs) and 6 of 7 at the stripe. Rohde, meanwhile, controlled the interior, shooting 9 of 13 from the field and 7 of 10 on free throws. The reigning GNAC Player of the Week had three of his nine rebounds on the offensive end, playing well at Alterowitz for the second straight year. The 6-9 center had his career-high 31 points exactly 11 months ago here.

Senior point guard Steve White had nine points and four assists as UAA shot 59.5 percent (25 of 42) from the field and saw all eight scorers tally at least four points.

The victory sets up a showdown Saturday against longtime rival Seattle Pacific, which polled just one point behind UAA atop the 2011-12 GNAC preseason coaches' poll. The Seawolves and Falcons tip at 6 p.m. AST on Saturday at SPU's Royal Brougham Pavilion.
