Men's Nordic dominate 10K classical

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Led by the highest team score in the men's 10K classical, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves combined for four All-America honors on Day 2 of the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships, Thursday at the Rikert Nordic Center.

The Seawolves combined for 188 points to advance them two positions into sixth place at the halfway mark of the NCAAs with 274.5 points. Leading the field for the second day was Vermont (389), while Colorado moved into second at 368.5 and Utah climbed to third at 350. Denver fell to fourth at 328, while New Mexico is fifth at 280, just 5.5 points ahead of UAA.

Making his NCAA debut with a third-place finish in the men's race was rookie Viktor Braennmark. A native of Alvsbyn, Sweden, Braennmark registered a time of 26 minutes, 28.5 seconds, helping UAA place all three scorers in the top 10 for 108 points.

Junior Lasse Moelgaard-Nielsen (Copenhagen), who missed the NCAA West Region while he was competing for Denmark's national team, returned to UAA with an eighth-place result at 26:50.6 for his first career All-America honor. Also collecting the first All-America honor of his career was junior Lukas Ebner in ninth place. Ebner, from Furtwangen, Germany, crossed at 26:51.3.

In the women's 5K classic freshman Marine Dusser was UAA's top 'Wolf for the 11th time of the season, finishing third for All-America honors. Dusser, a local of Villard de Lans, France, completed the cross country course in a time of 15:43.0. Throughout her young collegiate career, Dusser has amassed six podium results.

Also scoring for UAA was freshman Patricia Sprecher (Vaetttis, Switzerland) with a 12th-place showing at 16:19.9 and senior Karina Smith (Bekkestua, Norway), making her NCAA debut, with a 32nd-place result at 17:04.9. The trio added 80 points to UAA's total.
Winning the men's race was CU's Rune Oedogaard (26:00.2), while Vermont's Anja Gruber (15:31.1) took the women's crown.

The last time UAA won an event at the NCAAs was in 2009 when the men's team came away with a 130-point victory in the 20K freestyle event, propelling the Seawolves into a program-best fourth-place team finish.

Combined with senior Andreas Adde's All-America honor on Wednesday in the giant slalom, UAA already has five All-America honors with four races to go.

The Seawolves will return to action at the Middlebury Snow Bowl tomorrow with the men's and women's slalom, before the Nordic team competes in the freestyle races on Saturday.
