Yellowjackets hold off Seawolves, 75-67

BILLINGS – Montana State Billings took advantage of an ice-cold shooting performance by Alaska Anchorage in handing the Seawolves a 75-67 Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss here at Alterowitz Gymnasium Thursday night.

The Yellowjackets improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in GNAC play, while the Seawolves slipped to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in league play.

UAA, which came into the game as the No. 3 three-point field goal team in the nation (13.8 per game) and No. 6 scoring team in the country (92.1 ppg), made just six-of-26 three pointers and wound up scoring 25 points under their season average while shooting a season-low 34 percent from the field.

“I was happy with our physical effort, but we just didn't make shots and then we let it affect us,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “We're committed to this game plan, but we just weren't as mentally tough when we needed to be down the stretch.”

UAA broke to an early 11-5 lead, but the MSUB came back get the upper-hand in a see-saw affair to take a 34-29 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

The Yellowjackets got out of the blocks quickly in the second half and pushed the lead to 15 at 46-31 with 15:20 to go. MSUB was able to maintain a double-digit lead for much of the second half before the Seawolves went on a 13-2 run down the stretch to pull to within three, 70-67,  with 1:09 remaining.

UAA was unable to score the equalizer and MSUB cashed in at the charity stripe with five free throws in the waning second to put the game on ice.

The Seawolves were led by the double-figure scoring of Brian McGill (23), Travis  Thompson (21) and Teancum Stafford (10).  Stafford also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Yellowjackets were paced by 17-point effort of Chase Miller and 16-point, nine-rebound effort of Kalob Hatcher.

MSUB won the rebound battle, 38-31, and wound up outscoring UAA from behind the arc, 30-18.

The Seawolves will travel to Seattle Pacific for a 6 p.m. AST matchup on Saturday night.
