Hunter, Fain power 'Wolves past Vikings, 81-76

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Junior guard Dom Hunter scored 22 points and senior Derrick Fain poured in a career-high 19 points Thursday to power Alaska Anchorage to an 81-76 men's basketball victory over Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (11-9, 7-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high 10 points and six rebounds from sophomore wing Travis Parrish as they won here for the first time since Feb. 2009 and swept the regular-season series from WWU for the first time since 2007-08.

The Vikings (10-10, 3-7) nearly came back from a 25-point second-half deficit thanks to a monster 24-point, 15-rebounds performance from forward Anye Turner, but it was not enough to avoid their program's first back-to-back home losses since the final three games of the 2010-11 season.

UAA came out of gates roaring, getting two three-pointers from Fain during a 10-0 run that made it 16-5. The Seawolves continued to extend their advantage as they outshot the hosts 58 percent to 29 percent in taking a 41-23 lead into the break.

Travis Thompson (15 points, 3 assists, 0 turnovers in 35 minutes) nailed a three-pointer to start another run at the beginning of the second half and UAA seemed in total control with a 53-28 advantage at the 17-minute mark.

The Vikings would not go quietly, though, as Turner collected 20 points after halftime, finishing 6 of 11 from the field and 12 of 15 at the foul stripe.

UAA saw its lead sliced to 68-58 with 4:49 left and led by just a single possession when Turner's short jumper made it 70-67 with 2 minutes to play. Thompson answered with the play of the game for UAA at that point, however, as the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year drove baseline and converted a reverse layup as he was fouled. Thompson sank the free throw, and Hunter and Fain and Brian McGill closed out things from the free throw line.

Hunter shot 4 of 9 from the field and 12 of 13 at the stripe to tie his career scoring high, while McGill finished with 10 points and six assists.

The Seawolves complete their border road trip Saturday when they travel to Canada to face Simon Fraser at 6 p.m. AST.
