THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves start 2016-17 with NCAA powerhouse Minnesota in the season-opener, Oct. 7, before hosting in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks, Oct. 8 at the Sullivan Arena at 7:07 p.m. ADT both nights. Additionally, UAF and the Golden Gophers will play at 4:07 p.m., Oct. 9.

NOTES: The Seawolves take on UAF in a non-conference meeting – the first of five meetings this season and only game that isn't part of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup … this will be the 163rd all-time meeting between the teams … UAA and UAF met four times last season, with UAF going 3-0-1 … UAF leads 5-4-1 in the last 10 meetings, with the Seawolves' last win coming Jan. 17, 2015 (3-2 OT) … the last 11 games between the teams have been decided by just one goal.

NOTES: Minnesota leads 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings … UAA last played the Golden Gophers as members of the same conference, Jan. 11-12, 2013 – MINN swept, 4-3, 7-1, and was ranked No. 1 at the time … UAA's last wins came March 11-12, 2011, when the Seawolves upset the Golden Gophers, 4-3, 2-0 in the WCHA First Round at Mariucci Arena – sending UAA to the WCHA Final Five.

SEAWOLF BITES: UAA is unbeaten in the last 15 season openers at 12-0-3 ... the last season-opening loss came vs. Michigan State in 2001 … UAA returns 18 letterwinners, while losing seven … the Seawolves added eight newcomers, while they will dress sophomore redshirts Jonah and Nathan Renouf for the first time … both Jonah (1g, 2a) and Nathan (2a) furnished solid performances in the Seawolves' exhibition game vs. Simon Fraser – UAA won, 6-1 … the Seawolves also added fifth-year senior Rasmus Reijola, a goalie from St. Cloud State … UAA will be led by its captain, junior F Matt Anholt, and assistant captains senior D Chase Van Allen and junior G Olivier Mantha … the Seawolves are coached by Matt Thomas (4th year), Louis Mass (2nd year) and Joey Crabb (1st year).

SEASON RECAP: The Seawolves posted a 11-20-3 overall record under then 3rd-year head coach Matt Thomas and an 8-18-2 league record for 9th place in the WCHA standings … the 3-1 win on Jan. 17 was UAA's all-time 500th program win ... throughout the season, the Seawolves, who finished the first half at 5-5-2 in conference play, defeated two ranked teams in Bowling Green and Michigan Tech ... meanwhile, UAA's highlight of the season was a two-game road sweep of Michigan Tech (3-2, 3-2) in early December … the Seawolves were led by senior Blake Tatchell – who became the 23rd Seawolf to reach 100 career points – with 8-16–24 totals, while freshman Wyatt Ege was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team … Tatchell finished tied for 14th in the WCHA with 19 league points and tied for seventh with 13 assists … with 103 points, he finished No. 21 on the all-time list and the most for a Seawolf since Kevin Clark (108, 2006-10) … Tatchell was one of four WCHA teams what have a player with 100+ career points … Tatchell also finished his career with 72 assists, good for No. 12 on the all-time UAA list and the most since Mark Stitt's (1992-95) 88 … Tatchell produced 20+ points each season as a Seawolf … one of UAA's assistant captains, Tatchell dressed in 142 career games, good for a tie at No. 7 on the all-time UAA list ... leading UAA's goal scoring was then-sophomore F Tad Kozun with 13, including a team-high six power-play goals and two game-winning tallies … at 13-7—20, Kozun passed his point total from his rookie season (6-9–15) … Kozun finished 10th in the conference with 10 WCHA goals … Kozun was tied for 24th in the nation with the six power-play goals ... then-sophomore assistant captain F Matt Anholt was UAA's second-leading scorer with 7-15—22 totals … Anholt saw his team- and career-high seven-game point streak come to an end on Feb. 26 … Anholt's three goals and one assist vs. Lake Superior State landed him his first WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honor … pacing the UAA defensemen was then-sophomore D Jarrett Brown with 5-10—15 totals ... Brown and then-junior D Chase Van Allen (3-11—14) each furnished 13 points in league play, finishing tied for 8th … Van Allen produced a career-best 14 points, bettering his sophomore season (13) … dressing in 32 games between the pipes was then-sophomore Olivier Mantha … Mantha wrapped up his second season with a 10-18-3 overall record, .903 save percentage and a 2.88 goals-against average … his save percentage ranked No. 8 all-time in the UAA record books, while his GAA ranked at No. 9 in the single-season list Mantha was nominated for UAA's Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year honor … head coach Matt Thomas concluded his third season with the Seawolves and now is 37-58-11 with UAA.
