Box Score BURNABY, British Columbia – Tyler Brimhall scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds Thursday to lead the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball to its third straight victory with a 74-53 defeat of Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (10-7, 5-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got seven points and 13 rebounds from junior power forward Sjur Berg as they earned their first GNAC road win of the season and improved to 20-0 all-time against SFU.
The Clan (8-9, 2-7) got 13 points and 10 rebounds from center Julian Roche but the hosts trailed throughout, getting outshot 45 percent to 35 percent from the floor, including 39 percent to 18 percent from long range.
“Except for one short stretch in the second half when we got kind of sloppy, I thought we had one of our best efforts from opening whistle to buzzer this year,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “Tyler really carried us in the first half with his hot hand, and our defense did a good job all night of denying their jump shooters open looks. Sjur also did an amazing job of fighting for some tough rebounds and getting us some key extra possessions.”
Leading 7-3, Brimhall got started with a 17-foot jumper and continued his hot shooting throughout the half. After rattling off 11 straight Seawolf points for an 18-10 edge, he added another personal run of 8-0 to forge a 28-12 lead at the 6:41 mark.
UAA pushed its 37-25 halftime lead as high as 48-30 on a layup by Berg with 13:20 remaining, but the Clan would slowly chip away at their deficit, cutting it to a 52-44 Seawolf lead with 5:45 left. With a chance to make it to a two-possession game, SFU guard Bongani Moyo missed two free throws, and Seawolf guard Jack Macdonald stretched it back to a double-figure advantage with five points over the next two minutes.
The Seawolves ended the game on a 19-6 run over the last 4:15.
Brimhall – the reigning GNAC Player of the Week – topped the 20-point mark for the third straight game and ninth time overall in his first season at UAA. The former North Idaho College star shot 13 of 20 from the field, including 5 of 9 from deep, and snagged a pair of steals.
Macdonald finished with 12 points (3-6 FG, 2-3 3FG, 4-5 FT) and four rebounds, and sophomore guard Brennan Rymer had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and no turnovers as UAA outrebounded the hosts 40-35. Rymer now has 19 assists and just one turnover in the last three games.
Berg shot 3 of 6 from the field and collected five offensive caroms to come one rebound shy of his career high. The Norwegian has shot 50 percent or better now in 14 straight games.
UAA plays the second of four straight road games Saturday when it travels south to face Western Washington at 2 p.m. AST in Bellingham. Find live video and stats links on the men's basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com.
