Nighthawks knock off Seawolves in Nampa, 87-77

Box Score

NAMPA, Idaho – Junior forward Tyler Brimhall scored 19 points and freshman Tobin Karlberg added a career-high 14 points but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team Thursday in an 87-77 loss to Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

The Seawolves (12-11, 7-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots from senior center Brian Pearson as they had to settle for a regular-season split against NNU.

The Nighthawks (17-4, 12-3) were led by 23 points apiece from guards Adonis Arms and Obi Megwa, who combined to shoot 18 of 30 from the floor and pace 53 percent overall accuracy by the hosts. Jayden Bezzant added 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting off the bench as the hosts remained within one game of GNAC leader Saint Martin's in the league standings.

“Although we shot the ball pretty well, our poise and decision making were not very good tonight,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team shot 46 percent but committed 21 turnovers. “We are not going to beat many teams turning the ball over that many times. In addition, NNU played with a little more edge than us, which is disappointing. We will regroup and get ready for an athletic Central Washington team on Saturday.”

Having beaten the Nighthawks 85-73 in Anchorage last month, the Seawolves controlled the first 10 minutes of Thursday's contest as well, forging a 23-18 lead. Sophomore Keenan Dowell – who finished with a career-high nine points – kept tied it 28-28 on a short jumper with 5:43 left in the opening half before NNU caught fire.

The Nighthawks got a pair of layups off steals to spark a 14-2 run at that point, and took a 47-35 lead into the locker room. UAA was never able to cut its deficit to single digits in the second half despite 4-of-6 shooting from Karlberg. The former Grace Christian High School star made all three of his three-point attempts and did not commit a turnover in 17 minutes off the bench, while Dowell shot 4 of 4 from the field.

Pearson shot 4 of 9 from the field and 3 of 4 at the foul stripe, and his three blocks tied him for third place on UAA's career list, equaling the 90 blocks by Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Peter Bullock (2000-04).

With their final four regular-season games slated for the Alaska Airlines Center, the Seawolves will finish their road schedule Saturday with a 6 p.m. AST tip-off against Central Washington in Ellensburg. Live video and stats for that game will be available online at gnac.tv.
