Rymer's career night sparks 92-85 win at Central

Box Score

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Sophomore guard Brennan Rymer recorded 30 points, nine rebounds and nine assists Saturday and Tyler Brimhall added 21 points and nine rebounds as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team held on for a 92-85 victory over Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (13-11, 8-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference)
also got 15 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks from senior center Brian Pearson as they swept the season series from Central and stayed tied with Montana State Billings for fifth place in the GNAC standings.

UAA shot 55 percent from the floor and committed only nine turnovers in achieving its most points in a regulation game this season.

The Wildcats (10-14, 4-12) were led by 24 points from forward Zellie Hudson and 12 points and three assists from reserve guard Malik Montoya, but the hosts could not complete a late comeback after trailing by as many as 18 points.

“It was a good team win,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. “Of course, Brennan had a phenomenal game after struggling for a couple weeks. We made things interesting at the end by missing some free throws, but we only had nine turnovers against their pressure. Brian Pearson had a nice game and Austin (White) stepped up late with some good defensive possessions.” UAA took the lead five minutes into the contest on a three-pointer by Rymer, who connected on 10 of his first 11 shots, including a pair of treys. With the Seawolves nursing a 35-32 lead, Rymer then sparked huge run to end the first half, scoring 12 points in a 14-4 spurt.

The Seawolves led by double digits for much of the second half, extending to 80-63 on a Niko Bevens three-pointer with 5:54 left. UAA still led 84-70 with 1:48 remaining when Brimhall converted a feed from Pearson, but the hosts got hot from three-point range and took advantage of three Seawolf free-throw misses, slicing it to 86-83 with 22 seconds left.

Rymer sank a pair of free throws to make it 88-85 and, following a dunk by Montoya, Bevens sealed the win with two charity shots with 11 seconds left.

Rymer's 30 points and nine rebounds were each career highs, with his nine assists coming one shy of his personal best. The Sydney native also came just one point short of tying UAA's program record for most points by a foreign player, nearly matching the 31 points by fellow Australian Luke Cooper in a Feb. 2008 win at Northwest Nazarene.

Brimhall shot 9 of 14 from the field and grabbed a pair of steals, while Bevens and junior guard Jack Macdonald each tallied 11 points.

UAA gets its final four regular-season games at home, beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. against Western Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
