Simon Fraser free throws sink Seawolves in OT, 67-63

Box Score

ANCHORAGE – Junior forward Niko Bevens delivered a game-high 24 points but visiting Simon Fraser scored the final four points from the free-throw line in overtime Saturday to earn a 67-63 men's basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (13-13, 8-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points and 13 rebounds from junior power forward Sjur Berg as they fell into seventh in the GNAC standings with two games remaining.

The Clan (14-11, 8-9) were led by 18 points and 12 rebounds from freshman guard Wilfried Balata as the Canadians won for the fourth time in their last five games and beat the Seawolves for the first time in 21 all-time meetings.

“I thought we competed hard tonight,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team finishes the regular season with two more home games next week. “We defended well and we were able to get some good shots that just didn't go down. The big thing is we couldn't close out a game at the end again.”

The Seawolves scored 11 straight points to claim the largest lead of the game at 22-10 and took a 30-22 edge into halftime.

Bevens made it 36-26 with one of his five three-pointers at the 15:43 mark, but Simon Fraser began chipping away slowly. Michael Hannan brought the visitors even at 46-46 on a steal and layup with 7:26 remaining, and the game stayed within one possession for the rest of regulation.

Tyler Brimhall scored on a backdoor feed from Brennan Rymer with 58 seconds left to give UAA and 58-55 advantage, and Jack Macdonald kept the lead at three points with two free throws, following a pair of free throws by SFU center Julian Roche.

Declining to go for a two-point shot, Simon Fraser got the ball to Othniel Spence on the perimeter as the clock ran under 10 seconds. Spence – who had missed his first eight shots – used a ball fake to get free beyond the arc and sank his only field goal of the game to tie it, drawing a foul as well.

Spence sank his free-throw attempt to take the lead with 7.9 seconds left, but the Seawolves earned a final chance when Tobin Karlberg was fouled on a putback attempt with two-tenths of a second showing. The freshman missed the first free throw and swished the second to send the game to overtime, where neither team could convert offensively.

Bevens accounted for the only field goal for either squad in the extra session, banking home a jumper with 1:38 on the clock for a 63-63 deadlock.

After Balata made two free throws with 31 seconds left, Bevens had a chance to give UAA the lead, but his long three-point attempt bounced off the rim, and the Clan clinched it with two free throws from Michael Provenzano with five seconds left.

Bevens shot 9 of 18 from the field and 5 of 12 from long range, along with five rebounds, while Berg shot 6 of 9 and recorded his second double-double of the season. Brimhall scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and grabbed six boards, while Rymer dished a game-high seven assists.

Jasdeep Singh had 15 points and Roche delivered another double-double for the Clan with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Along with Saturday's other league results, four teams now sit within half a game of one another for the final two spots in the GNAC Tournament. Western Washington and Simon Fraser are tied for fifth with 8-9 GNAC records, while UAA and its Thursday opponent – Montana State Billings – are seventh at 8-10. The top six teams in the final standings qualify for the Mar. 7-9 event in Bellingham, Wash.

UAA will face Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. AST Tuesday at the Alaska Airlines Center, while WWU and SFU battle the same evening in British Columbia. For Seawolf tickets, visit GoSeawolves.com, AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com or call 907-786-1562.
