Box Score ANCHORAGE – Junior forward Tyler Brimhall poured in 33 points and sophomore point guard Brennan Rymer dished a career-high 13 assists Tuesday to power the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 100-86 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (14-13, 9-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high 24 points from junior guard Jack Macdonald as they shot a season-high 61 percent and improved their chances to earn one of the final two spots in next week's GNAC Tournament.
The Nanooks (5-21, 2-17) shot 59 percent themselves – including 15 of 23 (.652) from three-point range – and got double-figure scoring from five players, but the visitors were outrebounded 28-19 and outscored 23-11 at the free-throw line. Reserve guard Tre Eisenhut led UAF with 19 points and four assists.
“Defense was pretty optional out there tonight,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team scored a season high and its most points in a regulation game since Feb. 28, 2015. “We made a few more shots than them and we kept them off the offensive boards and made our free throws when we needed to.”
UAA took a 43-42 lead into the break after a first half that featured six ties and seven lead changes, plus 6-of-9 three-point shooting by the visitors.
The Nanooks forged a 52-52 tie when forward Tymoryae Glover drove for a dunk at the 15:56 mark, however he committed his fourth foul just 16 seconds later, and UAA seized the momentum on a three-pointer by Macdonald.
Holding onto a 68-65 edge with 10 minutes left, the Seawolves got two free throws from Macdonald and a traditional three-point play from senior center Brian Pearson to begin a 13-2 run over the next three minutes.
UAF sliced its deficit to 92-83 with two minutes on the clock but could get no closer.
Brimhall shot 11 of 16 from the field, 4 of 8 from long range and 7 of 7 at the free-throw line as the North Idaho College transfer came one shy of his career scoring high. The GNAC's fourth-leading scorer became the 12th player in UAA program history with at least four 30-plus scoring efforts, recording all of those in the last 11 games.
Macdonald shot 7 of 9 from the field – including 6 of 7 on threes – and 4 of 5 at the foul stripe to surpass his career high by one point. The Melbourne, Australia, native also delivered three assists and had just one of UAA's six turnovers in a team-high 35 minutes.
Meanwhile, Rymer added 15 points (4-6 FG, 7-9 FT) and the Sydney native dished the most assists by a Seawolf since 2014. It was also UAA's individual best against a Div. II opponent since All-American Luke Cooper had 18 against Saint Martin's on Mar. 6, 2008.
The Seawolves' field-goal percentage was their highest since shooting .612 (30-49) at Central Washington on Dec. 1, 2016.
With the victory, UAA sits in sixth place – the final GNAC playoff spot – with just one game remaining, a 7:30 'senior night' tip against Montana State Billings on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center. In addition to pregame ceremonies honoring UAA's seniors, that contest will also be part of Fan Appreciation Night, with multiple giveaways planned.
