SAN JOSE, Calif. – Junior
Hope Nelson scored a 38.225 in her first career all-around performance to lead the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team Friday night in a 195.025-192.125 dual-meet loss to San Jose State at the PCU Event Center.
The Seawolves also got a 38.175 all-around from freshman
Kenadi Brown as they broke the 192 barrier for the second time this season.
The Spartans led throughout the competition behind a 38.775 all-around from Taylor Chan as they bettered their previous season high by nearly half a point and swept the top spot on all five podiums.
"We had a couple early falls, but overall the gymnasts who performed deeper in the lineup did a nice job of keeping their poise and earning solid enough scores to get us over 192 tonight," said UAA head coach
Tanya Ho, whose team scored a season-high 192.525 in a Jan. 18 home dual against SJSU. "We didn't win this one, but now that we are finally a little healthier, we have a great chance to keep improving our scores and peaking at the end of the season."
The visitors opened with 48.300 points in the first rotation as Brown's career-high 9.8 bars routine helped UAA tie the 18th-highest total in program history on that apparatus. Senior
Sophia Hyderally earned a 9.775 and Nelson a 9.75.
Brown led the Seawolves on vault with a 9.575 and tied Nelson for UAA's second-best beam score at 9.7, trailing only Hyderally's 9.75.
Junior
Isabelle Fox paced a 48.225 total on floor with a runner-up 9.8, sophomore
Rachel Decious flipped to a 9.675, and junior
Tere Alonso earned a 9.625.
Nelson, from Newport News, Va., added a 9.575 on floor after entering with a career best of just 8.7 in two previous efforts.
"Hope has worked extremely hard to add a solid floor routine to her repertoire and I was extremely happy to see her deliver the way she did tonight," added Ho.
The Seawolves complete their California road trip with another dual meet Sunday at 1 p.m. AST when they visit Sacramento State. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and scoring.
