Box Score BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Junior center
Oggie Pantovic scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Saturday but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not complete an overtime comeback, falling 85-81 to Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (14-11, 7-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 20 points and seven rebounds from sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg as they lost despite committing just nine turnovers.
The Vikings (14-8, 9-5) were led by 22 points from guard D'Angelo Minnis, plus 17 points, 15 rebounds, eight blocks and four assists from center Logan Schilder, helping the hosts claim their second four-point victory over UAA this year.
"Our guys fought tremendously hard and put us in a great position to win in an extremely difficult road environment, but the bounces didn't go our way in the end," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "This is a tough loss, but I know our team is resilient enough to shake this off an get refocused for a pair of big home games next week."
After grabbing a 36-34 lead at halftime, the Seawolves stretched the game's largest advantage to 48-36 when Pantovic rebounded and dunked his own miss with 14:43 remaining.
The Vikings came back to forge a 60-60 tie, however, and took a 64-63 lead on a jumper from Minnis with five minutes remaining.
Karlberg nailed a three-pointer and assisted Pantovic for a layup to cap a 7-0 Seawolf run, and UAA clung to a 71-70 lead with under one minute left. After Western's Jalen Green tied it with a free throw, the Seawolves missed a pair of potential game-winning shots in the final eight seconds, sending the game to the extra session.
Despite going 4 of 21 from long range through regulation, the Vikings made their first two treys of the extra period to grab a two-possession lead. UAA sliced an 81-75 deficit in half on a three-pointer from
Tyrus Hosley with 51 seconds remaining and, following a defensive stop, Hosley was fouled on a three-point attempt with 9.8 seconds on the clock. The senior's first attempt rolled in and out, however, and the Seawolves were forced to foul after he made the second two for an 81-80 score.
After Minnis made two free throws, the Vikings chose to foul Karlberg with 1.9 seconds left, before the Seawolves could attempt a tying three-pointer. The 90 percent foul shooter made the first and missed the second on purpose, but his attempt missed the rim, giving the Vikings the ball with 1.2 seconds left, and Minnis finished the scoring with two more free throws.
Pantovic shot 12 of 29 from the field and 7 of 9 at the charity stripe, earning his sixth double-double and posting the first 30-point game for a Seawolf since Suki Wiggs scored 34 against Simon Fraser on Feb. 4, 2017.
Karlberg shot 7 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from long range as the local Grace Christian High School product reached the 20-point plateau for the third time, along with four assists, two steals and no turnovers in a career-high 38 minutes.
Senior forward
Niko Bevens added 11 points on 3-of-7 three-point shooting, while Hosley tallied five points, eight rebounds and three assists.
With six games left in the regular season – three at home and three on the road – the Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center to face Northwest Nazarene on Thursday at 7 p.m. Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
