ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team boosted its 2021 lineup Friday as interim head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch announced that Marcela Bonifasi has signed a scholarship agreement to compete for the Seawolves.
Originally from Guatemala City, Guatemala, the Seawolves' latest addition competed for her home country at both the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, and the prestigious Flanders International Team Challenge in Ghent, Belgium, in 2019.
Now a dual citizen, Bonifasi has trained in Georgia since moving to the United States in 2017.
"Marcela brings a lot of unique qualities to our team and adds depth and difficulty on all four events," Boggasch said. "She's gained invaluable experience competing internationally for Guatemala and Level 10 in the U.S. at the same time. I'm confident she'll be able to adapt quickly and be a big contributor for us this season."
Bonifasi is the Seawolves' first signee under Boggasch's leadership and becomes the fourth member of this year's recruiting class, joining previous signees Mantana Fairbairn (Strathmore, Alberta), Jessica Johnson (Chesapeake, Va.) and Emily Walker (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
