ANCHORAGE –
Jaedon Bradley scored 19 points and fellow newcomer
Da'Zhon Wyche added 12 points Thursday to lead a balanced attack for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team in a season-opening 87-63 victory over Midway at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves got at least seven points from eight of their 11 active players, while junior forward
Sawyer Storms delivered six rebounds, seven assists and no turnovers in his debut after transferring from Chaminade.
The Eagles, an NAIA program from Kentucky, were led by 14 points from Donnie Miller and 12 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting from fellow guard Dae'Shawn White.
"I thought we performed well for such a new squad," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team returns only three players who logged at least 40 total minutes in 2021-22. "We moved the ball well and showed good balance. This was a positive start to a long process, and we're excited about our outlook."
After trailing 4-3 in the opening minutes, the Seawolves took control with a back-to-back three-pointers from
Tyson Gilbert and Wyche to start a 14-5 surge.
Caleb Larsen nailed a trey to push the lead to 25-14 with 8:35 left, and UAA went to the locker room with the same advantage at 41-30.
Nick Keaton started the second half with a short jumper for the visitors, but they would get no closer as the Seawolves scored the next nine points.
UAA pushed its lead as high as 71-45 when newcomer
Jaron Williams scored a putback layup with 7:36 remaining.
A transfer from Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College, Bradley shot 5 of 10 from the field, including 3 of 5 on three-pointers, and 6 of 7 on free throws. He also grabbed five rebounds in 18 minutes.
Wyche shot 4 of 12 from the field and tallied two assists and two steals as the former Alaska 4A Player of the Year at West Anchorage High School and Texas-Tyler transfer made his long-awaited debut in a Seawolf uniform.
Gilbert and returnees
Vojtech Ruzek and
AJ Garrity each scored nine points, while Larsen had eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, and sophomore guard
Lachlan Viney had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
A transfer from Colorado State-Pueblo, Gilbert was making his Seawolf debut after missing the last two seasons due to the canceled 2020-21 season and recovery from an Achilles' injury suffered in April 2021.
"It was great to finally see Tyson back on the court," Osborne added. "He's worked so hard to get back to this point, and we're thrilled to finally have him contributing out there."
