ANCHORAGE – Junior guards
Tyson Gilbert and
Dathan Satchell scored 12 points apiece and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team used a strong defensive effort Saturday to earn a 68-58 victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (9-7, 3-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points each from senior guard
AJ Garrity and junior forward
Jaedon Bradley as they outshot the Canadian club .458 to .434 and outscored them 18-7 at the free-throw line.
The Red Leafs (6-11, 1-6) were led by 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from guard Elliot Dimaculangan, but were outrebounded 31-25 and shot just 6 of 27 (.222) from long range.
"I thought that we had a really good defensive first half," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team led 29-18 at the break. "We got fatigued in the second half and weren't as good in that area, but we made the necessary adjustments to hold on to our lead and showed great character when they made it close late in the game. Dathan was back in his shooting rhythm and gave us good minutes – including a couple of key steals and defensive boards – and we got other nice contributions up and down the lineup."
Except for a brief tie in the early going, the Seawolves led from start to finish, building their lead as high as 23-9 on a Satchell three-pointer with 5:27 left in the opening half.
After leading by 13 early in the second, the Seawolves saw their lead trimmed to 38-32 on a trey by Dimaculangan with 15 minutes left. The Red Leafs made it a three-point game five times between the 11- and 6-minute marks, but the Seawolves answered every time with a basket, including two by Satchell.
After reserve forward George Lefebvre hit a three-pointer to slice SFU's deficit to 54-52 with 3:12 left, the Seawolves answered with six straight points – two free throws from
Jaron Williams, a midrange jumper by Gilbert and two free throws by
Lachlan Viney – to secure the win.
A transfer from Las Positas (Calif.) Community College, Satchell shot 5 of 10 from the field (2-5 3FG), along with four rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Bradley shot 3 of 6 from the field and 4 of 4 at the charity stripe, helping UAA shoot a season-best .947 (18 of 19) from the line. Meanwhile, Garrity shot 2 of 3 from the field and 5 of 5 on free throws as the Southern California native tied career highs with seven rebounds and four steals.
Sawyer Storms produced seven points, five rebounds and two assists, and Williams delivered his usual solid effort off the bench with nine points (3-5 FG, 3-4 FT), three rebounds and a key steal.
The Seawolves travel south for two games next week, starting Thursday with a 4:15 p.m. AST tip against Western Oregon. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
