Viney, Storms power 76-66 win over Wildcats

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard Lachlan Viney delivered season highs of 21 points and six assists Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team surge to a 76-66 victory over Central Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (10-11, 4-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals from junior forward Sawyer Storms as they completed the season sweep of the Wildcats (9-13, 5-8).

Central Washington was led by 16 points from Samaad Hector and 15 points from fellow forward Matt Poquette, but the visitors were hurt by 20 turnovers.

"I was proud of the way we overcame that little lull in the first half and reestablished control with a nice run before halftime," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team connected at 53 percent from the floor and 48 percent (12 of 25) on three-pointers. "In the second half we continued to play with a lot of confidence offensively and executed our game plan well. That was a solid team win tonight."

After beating the Wildcats 90-72 on Jan. 5 in Washington, the Seawolves took control of the rematch immediately, jumping to a 7-0 advantage and turning three straight steals into buckets for a 16-4 lead.

Central Washington responded with a 15-0 run, however, and led 26-23 when Poquette swished a midrange jumper at the 5:15 mark.

The Seawolves would respond with a run of their own, getting two baskets apiece from Viney and AJ Garrity in a 17-5 over the final five minutes of the opening half.

Hector scored inside to open the second half, but the Wildcats would get no closer as Storms and Tyson Gilbert made back-to-back shots for the Seawolves, who led by double digits the rest of the way.

UAA pushed its largest advantage to 74-50 on Caleb Larsen's three-pointer with 3:48 to play.

A transfer from fellow NCAA Div. II program Hawaii Pacific, Viney shot 6 of 13 from the floor, 3 of 5 from long range and 6 of 8 at the foul stripe, coming just shy of his career bests of 23 points and seven assists as a Shark.

Meanwhile, Storms – another Pacific West Conference transfer from Chaminade – was huge in the opening half, grabbing two steals and sailing in for fastbreak dunks. The Idaho native shot 6 of 8 from the field and finished with an impressive plus/minus number of 33 on the night.

Gilbert scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting (3-4 3FG), Dathan Satchell chipped in 10 points and four rebounds, and Garrity had eight points, four assists and no turnovers before fouling out.

The Seawolves play four of their final six games on the road, starting Thursday (6 p.m. AST) at Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
