Seawolf stifle Red Leafs for 58-51 road win

BURNABY, British Columbia – Senior guard AJ Garrity led a balanced effort for Alaska Anchorage with eight points and a career-high eight rebounds Thursday in a 58-51 victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (11-11, 5-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points apiece from juniors Sawyer Storms and Tyson Gilbert as they evened their overall record and swept the season series from the Red Leafs (6-18, 1-13).

Simon Fraser was led by 17 points and nine rebounds from guard Jahmal Wright, but the hosts could not capitalize on a 39-29 rebounding advantage.

"We were able to get into their passing lanes and caused a lot of havoc," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team forced 24 turnovers and committed just 10 of its own. "Even when some easy shots weren't going down, we didn't panic and played great team defense on the other end. When you look at a box score and see you won without producing a double-figure scorer, that's a testament to your team's toughness as well."

After beating the NCAA's lone Canadian team 68-59 last month in Anchorage, the Seawolves controlled action for most of the rematch, taking the lead midway through the first half with a 9-0 run.

Simon Fraser used a 6-0 spurt to cut its deficit to 31-26 at halftime and rallied for ties at 33-33 and 43-43, but the hosts could never regain the lead.

Sophomore center Evan Hoosier gave the Seawolves the advantage with consecutive baskets to make it 47-43, and Garrity grabbed one of his career-high five steals and fed Gilbert for a fastbreak layup and a 52-43 edge with 7:55 remaining.

Garrity nailed a three-pointer with 3:39 left for a 55-44 lead, and the Red Leafs never got closer than a pair of six-point deficits in the final 2:12.

A third-year transfer from Santiago Canyon (Calif.) College, Garrity also tied his UAA career high with four assists, while not committing a turnover in 27 minutes. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native added his first career blocked shot as well.

Gilbert grabbed three of UAA's 14 steals, junior guard Dathan Satchell had seven points, five rebounds and two steals, and sophomore guard Lachlan Viney had seven points and three steals for UAA, which improved to 25-2 all-time against SFU, including a 12-1 mark in Burnaby.

Hoosier recorded six points on 3-of-6 shooting and the first multi-block game of his career with a pair of swats.
