Seniors power historic day in win over Tribe

ANCHORAGE – Senior Rachel Decious posted a pair of individual wins and the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team recorded season bests on all four apparatus Sunday to earn its first victory of 2023, defeating William & Mary 193.700-192.775 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves also got individual victories from Paola Ruano Barahona and sophomores Alyssa Manley and Montana Fairbairn as they equaled the sixth-best team score in program history. UAA earned the program's third-best balance beam total at 48.875 and ninth-best floor total at 48.775.

The Tribe – who scored a season high for the second straight meet – were led by Michelle Ngo's 9.825 score on beam.

"We are thrilled with our performance today," said UAA head coach Marie-Sophie Boggasch. "I couldn't be happier for our outgoing seniors, executing their routines so well and getting career highs in their last home meet. We are starting to realize our potential for some very solid scores as we finally start to get healthy."

Coming off a narrow loss to the visitors from Virginia on Friday and despite trailing midway through Sunday's rematch, the Seawolves' comeback started with their historic effort on beam in the third rotation. Decious tied the second-best score of her career and Ruano Barahona – a freshman from El Salvador – joined her atop the podium with a 9.825. Fairbairn and senior Mackenzie Robinson tied with 9.75s, while sophomore Shannon Farrell had a 9.725 to give UAA five of the top six on beam.

The Seawolves clinched the win on floor as Decious – competing in her final home meet – tallied a career-high 9.85, along with a 9.825 from freshman Ariana DeSouza. Robinson earned her second career high of the day with a 9.8 on floor, and freshman Madelyn Gomez tumbled to a 9.675.

Manley won bars for the second meet in a row with a 9.775, while sophomore Emily Walker posted a career-high 9.675.

Meanwhile, Fairbairn recorded UAA's best vault of the season with a career-high 9.775 and earned the win for the second straight meet, and fellow sophomore Silje Hildebrand delivered a career-best 9.675.

The Seawolves are idle next weekend before returning to the road for meets Feb. 17 at Simpson and Feb. 19 at Iowa State. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and scoring.
