Seawolves add Utah prep star Simmons

ANCHORAGE (Apr. 18) – The Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team has made another sizable addition as head coach Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that Utah prep star Lyman Simmons has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

A 6-10, 220-pound post, Simmons recently completed his senior season at Real Salt Lake Academy in Herriman, Utah. The St. George, Utah, native averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and shot 71 percent from the field in his lone season at RSL, where he teamed with fellow Seawolf signee Trey Evans.

"We are very excited to add a player of Lyman's size and ability to our program," said Osborne. "He is a young man who has a bright future. We needed to add size and skill to our lineup, and we feel Lyman and (fellow signee) Sloan Lentfer accomplish that goal. They are both talented, and should really complement each other with different strengths."

Simmons played his first three prep seasons at Snow Canyon High School in St. George, where he led his school to a 24-2 record and its first state title in 20 years in 2021-22. He averaged 15.6 points and 7.8 rebounds as a junior that season, earning Utah 4A Player of Year and First Team All-State honors. Along with a season-high 27-point game, he also made the game-winning layup at the buzzer in SCHS's state semifinal win over Sky View.

"After an outstanding three years at Snow Canyon, Layman decided to challenge himself at RSL against national competition and had a great season, starting on a balanced team full of future mid/high-major teammates," Osborne added. "He has the ability to play in the low post and also step out on the perimeter as a shooter and a willing passer. Similar to Sloan, he is an excellent passer, which is essential in our system, but he also has tremendous hands and the ability to finish inside."

As a sophomore, Simmons averaged 17 points and nine rebounds on his way to Second Team All-State honors, and he averaged 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds as a freshman.

Simmons joins Evans (6-5, PG, Salt Lake City, Utah) and Lentfer (6-7, F, Anchorage/Grace Christian HS) as the third member of UAA's 2023 recruiting class.
