Seawolf gymnasts make huge leap on Senior Day

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 21) – Montana Fairbairn and Silje Hildebrand delivered a pair of career highs each as the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team scored a solid 191.050 in a dual-meet loss to UC Davis at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Aggies won the meet with a 195.300 total, led by a winning 38.700 all-around from Emma Otsu and a 38.550 all-around from Amelia Moneymaker.

Competing in just their second meet of the season, UAA made a huge jump from its opening-night score of 186.250, improving on all four apparatus. The Seawolves broke the 48-point barrier on three of the four events, with a 48.500 on balance beam and a 48.075 on floor.

"I'm really proud of our team for making the individual adjustments and bouncing back so strong from Friday's performance," said UAA head coach Marie-Sophie Boggasch. "It will be exciting to get back in the gym next week and start working on the necessary improvements for the rest of the season."

Fairbairn produced a 9.8 on floor exercise for a career high and UAA's highest score of the day, along with a career-high-tying 9.775 on balance beam and a 9.7 on vault. The Strathmore, Alberta, native totaled a 38.350 in just her second career all-around effort.

A senior from Yakima, Wash., Hildebrand started her final home meet by tying her career-best 9.675 on vault, and ended with the same score on floor.

Senior Emily Walker led UAA on uneven bars for the second meet in a row with a 9.6, along with junior Hayley Perkins.

The big day on balance beam was led by 9.775s from Fairbairn and senior Jessica Johnson, along with a 9.675 from freshman Claudia Lessig, a 9.65 from Walker and a 9.625 from sophomore Marcela Bonifasi.

Sophomore Ariana DeSouza had UAA's second-best score on floor with a 9.725.
