NORMAL, Ill. (Feb. 23) – Freshmen
Maddy Murphy and
Claudia Lessig posted solid performances Friday to highlight the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team's showing at the Illinois State tri-meet at CEFCU Arena.
Lessig earned a 38.475 in her second all-around performance as UAA totaled 189.725 points, trailing host Illinois State (195.550) and Western Michigan (194.900).
The Seawolves' vault score of 48.225 was the program's best since the 2016 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, led by a 9.8 from Murphy, a 9.725 from junior
Montana Fairbairn, and a 9.625 from Lessig. Murphy's score tied for third place in the meet and was UAA's first 9.8 or better on vault since current head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch tallied a 9.8 at the MPSF Championships.
"Our vaulters have shown a lot more consistency this year, and it has paid off with a couple season highs in a row," said Boggasch, who competed for the Seawolves from 2013-16. "It's great to see a reward for their hard work in the practice gym, and we are excited for a bright future on that event with Maddy and Claudia anchoring our lineup."
Murphy also excelled on floor, matching Lessig's 9.625, along with a team-high 9.675 from Fairbairn.
Senior
Jessica Johnson led the way on beam with a 9.75 to boost a 47.825 total, while Lessig and Fairbairn delivered 9.7 and 9.65, respectively.
Lessig scored 9.525 and junior
