Breeann Spain posted a pair of career bests Friday to pace a 189.775 total for the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team in its season opener at The Hornet's Nest.
The Seawolves finished third in the team competition, trailing host Sacramento State (194.100) and Cornell (191.500).
Starting on floor exercise, the Seawolves had their best success of the night, taking first place after one rotation with 48.350 points. Veterans
Montana Fairbairn and
Ariana DeSouza led the way with 9.775 and 9.75, respectively, while Spain recorded a 9.625. Boyd and fellow rookie
Jordan Grindol posted 9.6s to round out the scoring.
Fairbairn sprung to another team-best score with a 9.625 on vault in the second rotation, while sophomore
Jamilia Duffus – a transfer from Talladega – scored 9.475 in her Seawolf debut.
Sophomore
Avery Tillmanns led UAA in the third rotation with a 9.625 on her first career uneven bars performance, while sophomore
Claudia Lessig managed a 9.6.
UAA finished with a 47.500 total on balance beam, getting a third-place 9.75 from William & Mary senior transfer
Grace Costello and a 9.55 from Spain.
