ANCHORAGE (Feb. 20) – Junior
Jamilia Duffus delivered three strong efforts and the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team topped the podium on all four events Friday to earn a 192.125-188.125 dual victory over Centenary at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (3-6) recorded their best overall score of the season by nearly two full points, along with their best marks on vault (47.825), uneven bars (48.100) and balance beam (48.325).
"Our gymnasts delivered nicely on the adjustments we've been making over the past couple weeks, and we got consistent scoring up and down the lineup tonight," said UAA head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch. "We hope to send our seniors out with another season high on Sunday."
UAA got off to a strong start on vault, led by a team season-high 9.7 from Duffus and a career-high 9.6 from junior
Jada Niles. The Seawolves extended their lead in the second rotation by taking the top four spots on bars, with freshman
Tessa Richardson earning her first career victory with a 9.75. Duffus was runner-up with a 9.7, followed by junior
Claudia Lessig (9.625) and senior
Madelyn Gomez (9.55).
Sophomore
Jordan Grindol matched her own personal best and team season-high on beam with a 9.775, while freshman
Alexandra Karkowski notched runner-up at 9.75. Niles and senior
Ariana DeSouza delivered 9.675 and 9.575, respectively.
DeSouza continued her momentum into the final rotation, winning floor exercise with a UAA season-best 9.75, just ahead of Centenary's Amy Foret (9.7). Duffus earned a 9.65 and junior
Maria Jose Prieto scored 9.55 on floor to aid a 47.875 total.
