Seawolf men contain Redhawks

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 24) - Behind 22 points from freshman Mark Drake and a stifling defensive effort, the UAA men's basketball team posted its most lopsided win over the season Thursday, beating Seattle University 73-53 at the Sports Center.

UAA (5-12, 5-3 GNAC) also got 14 points each from guard Ty Shippen and forward Josh Evans, while Darnell Lyons led Seattle (3-15, 2-7) with 17 points.

The Seawolves jumped to an early lead, holding the Redhawks to single digits until a Lyons layup made it 31-11 with only 3:50 showing in the first half. UAA took a 38-17 advantage into the locker room, its best defensive output of the season.

Evans, a sophomore from Anchorage, hit 6 of 11 shots in re-establishing his career-high for the second time in three games. Meanwhile, Drake was hot from outside, hitting 6 of 11 threes and 8 of 13 overall. It was the Shelbyville, Ind., native's third 20-point outing.

UAA was credited with 25 assists on its 27 field goals, equaling the team's best assist mark of the season. Junior point guard Bryson Vaughan had eight of those assists while committing just one of UAA's nine turnovers.

The Seawolves were red-hot from three-point range in the first half, with Shippen leading the way on 4-of-4 long-range shooting.

Meanwhile, the Seawolf bench did a workmanlike job of keeping the Redhawks at bay, outscoring the Seattle subs 31-14. All 12 Seawolves saw playing time, including senior forward Nelson Williams, who led the team with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks in just 14 minutes.

The loss snapped a three-game losing streak as UAA prepares to host Northwest Nazarene in another Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday. That game, which tips off at 7:05 p.m., will feature a Delta Air Lines promotion at halftime, giving one lucky fan a chance to win two round-trip tickets anywhere Delta flies in the Lower 48.
