FORT RICHARDSON (Dec. 20) - Mark Drake and Cody Gallatin led a late charge, but Colorado School of Mines guard Stephen Bahl hit a tiebreaking shot with 18 seconds remaining to give the visiting Orediggers an 83-81 victory over the Seawolves tonight.
UAA (3-5) got 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds from Peter Bullock, while center Mike McNish led CSM (7-2) with 18 points and eight rebounds.
The Seawolves, who led by as many as 13 in the first half, found themselves on the wrong end of a 71-55 count with eight minutes to play. However, a three-pointer by Drake (5-of-6 3FG) and a pair of buckets by Shane Bannarbie started a UAA comeback.
With the score 81-73, Gallatin hit a three-pointer and Drake followed with a floater in the lane to draw within 81-78. After another defensive stop, Gallatin hit trey off an inbounds pass to tie it with 48 seconds left. But Bahl scored the final two of his 16 points on a driving layup, accounting for the final margin. Gallatin's last-second, desperation three was blocked by Chad Friehauf.
Drake ended with 21 points - his second straight game over 20 - and Gallatin had 13 points, a game-high six assists and no turnovers in 14 minutes of action. Junior guard Scott Stevens scored all of his career-high 12 points in the first half.
The game was played at Buckner Fieldhouse on the Fort Richardson Army Base. Saturday night's rematch will be at UAA's regular home, the Sports Center, with another 7:05 p.m. tip.
