Bucs beat Seawolves in OT

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 31) - Six Seawolves scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the UAA men's basketball team dropped a 96-94 overtime decision to Christian Brothers in the final game of the Glacier Classic tonight at the Sports Center.

Peter Bullock had 19 points and 11 rebounds for UAA (4-7), while Bob Austin and Cody Gallatin chipped in 14 apiece. Christian Brothers (6-4) had seven players score double figures, led by Matt Francis' 18.

The Seawolves led 45-34 at halftime and increased their advantage to 51-36 three minutes into the second half. With the score 66-56, however, Dmitry Popov hit two straight three-pointers to start a 10-0 Christian Brothers run.

The Buccaneers, of Memphis, Tenn., forged ahead for the first time with five minutes remaining and held an 80-75 advantage with 2:43 to go. Bullock responded with six straight points to give the Seawolves a short-lived lead as Popov drilled another three-pointer six seconds later. UAA's Bob Austin tied it with a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, and the Bucs couldn't get off a shot on the final possession of regulation.

Adam Fitt-Chappell, who along with Bullock made the All-Classic Team, scored the last of his 13 points to open the overtime. However, CBU's Clint Dowdle sank a three on the next possession to give the Bucs the lead for good. Leading 95-91, CBU missed four straight free throws, but the Seawolves could not take advantage. Gallatin, who had a career-high 11 assists, hit a three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left to make the score closer.

UAA's Blaine Durrant scored a career-best 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while fellow junior transfer Scott Stevens hit all three of his three-pointers and finished with 11 points.

The Bucs, who shot 52.6 percent, got 10 points and 10 rebounds from forward Jordan Jeffries, while frontcourt mate Adam Heitzman had 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Both players made the All-Classic Team.

In the evening's first game, Steve Towne scored a game-high 18 points to lead Alaska Fairbanks (9-2) to a 94-61 win over Montevallo (2-9).

The Seawolves are off until Jan. 9, when they resume Great Northwest Athletic Conference play against Central Washington (7:05 p.m.) at the Sports Center.
