Seawolves plaster Pioneers

FAIRBANKS (Dec. 29) - Kemmy Burgess and Mark Drake put on a shooting clinic, combining for 54 points in UAA's 108-51 men's basketball win over Columbia Union at the Glacier Classic here Monday.


The Seawolves (10-2) won their fifth straight, getting a scoring contribution from all 12 players. Burgess and Drake accounted for 13 of UAA's 18 three-pointers, one short of the school record.


Columbia Union (0-12), which got 17 points each from Raymond Strachan and Michael Gordon, briefly held the lead at 8-6 before Adam Simpson drained a three-pointer to put UAA ahead for good. The Seawolves blitzed to a 57-29 halftime lead and cruised to the eighth-largest margin of victory in school history.


Point guard Aaron Lawrence dished a career-high 10 assists, while Scott Stevens came off the bench to account for eight more. Peter Bullock (8 points) was held to single-digits for the first time this season, but he collected a game-high 12 rebounds.


Burgess' 29 points (10-16 FG, 6-11 3FG, 3-3 FT) were a career-high, and the junior also accounted for six rebounds. Meanwhile, Drake came off the bench to nail 7 of 12 threes and, with 155, now needs just four more to leapfrog Scott Larrabee (157) and Chris Hamey (158) on for second place on the Seawolves' career list.


UAA outrebounded the Takoma Park, Md., school 45-33 and held the Pioneers to 27.5 percent shooting.


The Seawolves play their final non-conference game Tuesday night (6 p.m.) when they face Lake Superior State (Mich.) in Game 3 of the Classic.
