ANCHORAGE (Dec. 31) -
James Hartman drilled a fade-away three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left Friday to lift the UAA men's basketball team to a 64-61 victory over Nyack (N.Y.) in the final game of the Glacier Classic at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Hartman led UAA (6-5) with 17 points, while freshman Carl Arts contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Nyack (6-5) got 44 points from the inside-outside tandem of Lataiva Escho and Antaeus Hayes, which accounted 70 percent of the Warrriors' field goals.
The Seawolves led 25-21 at halftime and threatened to pull away several times in the second half. UAA took its largest advantage at 41-31 with 12 minutes to play when Mark Drake converted a conventional three-point play.
But then the Warriors lived up to their name, clawing within two points on three occasions, the final one coming on an Escho layup that made it 60-58 with 25 seconds left. Nyack fouled UAA point guard Luke Cooper, who had just split a pair of free throws on the previous possession, and the freshman from Australia again made just one of two.
With the door open, Escho tossed up an off-balance shot from 23 feet with a hand in his face, and celebrated as it banked in. The 6-7 power forward had attempted just three three-pointers on the season before making his shot with 10 seconds to play.
UAA declined to take a timeout, and with six seconds showing, Cooper dished to Hartman, who faked but couldn't shake his defender. The 6-5 junior transfer then leaned back and swished his biggest shot as a Seawolf, prompting and eruption from the WFSC crowd of 854.
Hartman, who was named to the All-Classic Team along with Cooper, then intercepted the ensuing full-court inbounds pass to seal the win and put UAA above .500 for the first time since it was 1-0.
Cooper, who is running the show exclusively at point guard while leading scorer Marcus Robinson sits with a broken hand, was solid all night, dishing seven assists to go with nine points (3-5 FG) and four steals in 40 minutes.
The victory was a total team effort from the Seawolves, whose five starters all played 31 or more minutes. Arts made 6 of 7 shots; Drake shot poorly (4-12 FG, 1-7 3FG) but still finished with 10 points; and Adam Fitt-Chappell came up with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In Friday's early game, Alaska Fairbanks (8-3) had little trouble with winless Ohio Valley (0-11), running away with a 99-61 victory. Classic Most Outstanding Player Brad Oleson led the Nanooks with 28 points (9-15 FG), five rebounds, five assists and five steals, while forward Ivan Miskovic (14 points, 6-7 FG, 10 rebounds) also made the All-Classic Team.
