SEATTLE (Feb. 19) - Junior guard Kemmy Burgess put together another incredible second-half performance to lead the UAA men's basketball team to a 59-55 comeback victory at Seattle University on Thursday night.
Burgess finished with game-highs of 23 points and eight rebounds for UAA (17-7, 7-6 GNAC), while Peter Bullock chipped in 11 points. Seattle (8-15, 4-10) had only two double-digit scorers as UAA limited the Redhawks to 36.4 percent shooting.
The Seawolves' 31.6 percent shooting in the first half led to a 27-23 deficit at the break, but they came out hot in the second 20 minutes, making 57.9 percent, including 4 of 5 three-pointers.
A Burgess three with 16 minutes left sparked a 10-2 run that put UAA up 40-35. Seattle battled back to got up 44-42 when Trevante Nelson nailed a three with 10 minutes to go, but Burgess answered with another three to put the Seawolves up for good at the 8:45 mark.
Burgess fed Blaine Durrant (season-high 8 points) for a fastbreak layup made it 50-44, then sank another trey moments later to push the lead to 53-46 with 4:29 showing. Neither team would score again until Seattle's Ryan Webb made a three with 1:03 to play.
After Bullock split a pair of free throws, Andy Bloom hit a three to slice UAA's lead to 54-52. The Seawolves then ran the 35-second clock down and got a layup from Burgess to go up 56-52 with 11 seconds left.
Seattle's Bim Makinde knocked down yet another three with 5 seconds to go, but the Seawolves made 3 of 6 free throws in the final ticks to seal the win.
Burgess wound up with 16 points (4-4 3FG) and seven rebounds in the second half, helping UAA to a 33-29 edge on the boards.
The win was critical for UAA, which is ranked in the eighth and final playoff spot in the West Region. The Seawolves will try to finish their first two-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference road sweep when they visit Northwest Nazarene (9-13, 4-10) in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday.
