Seasiders edge Seawolves in 1st round

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Mar. 12) - The Seawolf men's basketball team got off to a blazing start but couldn't sustain its momentum Friday, as its season ended with a 67-61 loss to 25th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii in the NCAA Division II West Regional quarterfinals at Coussoulis Arena.

Peter Bullock had team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds in his final game, while junior Kemmy Burgess scored 15 points for UAA (20-10). BYU-Hawaii (23-5), the champions of the Pacific West Conference, was led by center Jake Chrisman's 27 points and 10 rebounds, while guard Shawn Opunui scored 16 points on 4-of-4 three-point shooting.

The Seawolves, who entered the game as the top three-point shooting team in Division II at 46.1 percent, made their first five threes and six of their first seven to build a 27-14 lead midway through the first half.

But UAA, the No. 7 seed in the regional, went cold from that point and wound up making just three of its final 17 long-range attempts. BYU took advantage of UAA's slump to cut its disadvantage to 33-29 at the half. The second-seeded Seasiders then began the second half with a 13-4 spurt to take a lead they would never relinquish.

UAA came back from 8-point deficits on four occasions, getting as close as 63-61 on Jesse Brown's layup with 46 seconds remaining. But Opunui nailed a pair of free throws to put BYU up four, and Adam Fitt-Chappell (13 points) missed a three on the other end, ending UAA's comeback effort.

Mark Drake was the fourth Seawolf in double figures with 10 points (3-4 3FG), but no one else scored more than three.

BYU advances to Saturday's 5 p.m. regional semifinal against Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Humboldt State, who defeated Cal Poly Pomona 86-83 in the first game of the day.

The Seawolves are now 8-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
