SEATTLE (Jan. 20) -
Marcus Robinson scored 23 points in his return from injury, and
Carl Arts pulled down 15 rebounds Thursday as UAA fell 91-76 to 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific in men's basketball action at Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (8-8, 2-5 GNAC) hung tough against the West Region's top-ranked team, but the hot-shooting Falcons (13-3, 5-1) got 26 points apiece from Dustin Bremerman and Tony Binetti to move into first place in the league standings.
UAA led 7-3 early thanks to five quick points from sophomore Aaron Severson, who got his first collegiate start. SPU responded decisively over the next six minutes, however, with a 23-6 run that pushed its lead to 13 points. A Mark Drake (15 points) three-pointer sparked a 7-0 spurt for the Seawolves at that point, and UAA found itself trailing just 45-41 at halftime.
Adam Fitt-Chappell baskets twice cut the deficit to one on consecutive possessions early in the second half, but that is as close as the short-handed Seawolves would come. The Falcons increased their lead by shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 84 percent from the free throw line.
While Robinson (6-14 FG, 11-14 FT) was back in the lineup for the first time since suffering a fractured hand Dec. 4, the Seawolves were without James Hartman (stomach flu), their fifth-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder.
Center Bryan Freshwater was instrumental in keeping the Seawolves close despite their personnel woes. The 6-8 junior scored a personal-best 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Arts scored just six points, but the freshman's 15 rebounds were the second-most for a Seawolf this year.
UAA will try to snap its two-game slide with another tough road game, Saturday night (6 p.m.) against GNAC contender Western Washington in Bellingham.
