Seawolf men whack Walla Walla

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 19) - The shooting-guard combo of Kemmy Burgess and Eric Draper mustered 46 points and the UAA men's basketball team turned up its defense a notch in the second half to record a 88-62 victory Monday over Walla Walla College at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (8-3) also got 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting from sophomore forward Joe Davis as they won their third straight game. Walla Walla (9-7) was led by forward Jeremy Claridge's 15 points and eight rebounds.

Burgess matched his season-high for the third time with 28 points (10-21 FG, 6-13 3FG, 2-2 FT) and dished four assists, while Draper connected on 6 of 11 from the field (5-10 3FG) for a career-high 18 points.

The Seawolves clicked on offense early against the National Christian College Athletic Association team, building a 41-23 lead on Draper's layup at the 7:19 mark. But UAA hit a lull that resulted in the Wolves cutting the lead to 52-40 at the half.

The second half was more typical of the Seawolves' strong early-season defensive performances, however, as they held the visitors from Washington to just 28 percent shooting in the last 20 minutes.

UAA finished with a 40-30 rebounding advantage and shot 50.7 percent (34-67) from the field, while its eight turnovers were a season-low. Seniors Brian Hills and James Hartman led the team with eight rebounds apiece, and sophomore point guard Luke Cooper dished seven assists in just 15 minutes of play.

The Seawolves and Wolves will play a rematch Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. AST at the WFSC.
