Men fall in overtime at No. 3 Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Dec. 29) - Kemmy Burgess' career-high 35 points weren't enough Thursday to put the Seawolf men's basketball team over the hump as it suffered a tough 112-106 overtime loss to third-ranked Western Washington at Carver Gym.

The Seawolves (9-4, 0-1 GNAC) also got a 22-point, 10-rebound effort from Brian Hills and shot 53 percent as a team as it had its four-game win streak snapped. The Vikings (9-1, 1-0) got 20-plus points from three players, including 32 by forward Tyler Amaya, who made 9 of 13 from the field goals and 14 of 16 from the free throw line.

WWU star Grant Dykstra scored 25 points and had eight rebounds and five assists, but he fouled out with 52 seconds left in regulation when he undercut Hills on a rebound attempt. Hills made both free throws to knot the score 94-94, and the Seawolves had a chance to win after Ryan Diggs missed a three-pointer with 39 seconds to play. After calling two timeouts, Burgess found himself double-teamed and kicked to Aaron Lawrence, who missed a free-throw line jumper with two seconds left.

In the extra session, WWU tallied the first six points, including a pair of buckets by Amaya. Carl Arts' jumper at the 2-minute mark sliced it to 101-98 before Amaya answered on the other end with his final basket of the night.

UAA held a 48-46 lead at halftime and worked its advantage to 69-58 on an Arts basket with 10:52 remaining. Adam Fitt-Chappell (8 points, 6 assists) made two free throws to put the Seawolves up 88-79 with 3:43 left, and WWU's 18-game regular-season home win streak seemed in big jeopardy.

Dykstra struck back for the Vikings at that point, nailing a pair of threes to tighten the score, and WWU point guard Kyle Jackson gave his team its first lead of the second half, 92-90 with 1:36 to play. Burgess (11-25 FG, 5-8 3FG, 8-10 FT, 4 assists) made a pair of charities and Jackson fed Brett Weisner for a layup on the ensuing possession to set up Hills' game-tying free throws.

The Seawolves get another chance at their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win when they travel to Ellensburg, Wash., for a New Year's Eve matchup with Central Washington (6-4, 1-0). That game tips at 3 p.m. AST.
