ANCHORAGE (Feb. 26) -
Mark Drake played his final home game at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday night, and he made every minute count.
The senior scored a game-high 32 points, including the game-clinching free throw with 4.7 seconds left, and Carl Arts recorded a double-double as the Seawolves held on for an 83-82 victory over arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks in front of a raucous, sellout crowd.
UAA (11-14, 5-11 GNAC) led 38-27 at halftime and increased its lead to 60-45 with 10 minutes left when Drake knocked down his fourth three-pointer. UAF (17-8, 11-5) responded with an 8-0 run at that point, and the game stayed tense the rest of the way.
Nanooks star Brad Oleson (25 points, 7-11 FG) made all three of his three-pointers during UAF's late run, but it wasn't quite enough to keep his team from falling out of a first-place tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.
Arts made four straight free throws to put UAA up 81-73 with 22 seconds to play. A three-pointer by Andrew Smith (18 points) drew the visitors within five, and Luke Cooper split a pair of free throws on UAA's next possession.
Fairbanks point guard Chris Smith, who had been scoreless to that point, made a three with 7 seconds showing to cut it to 82-79, and Drake was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play.
The Shelbyville, Ind., native stepped up to the line and drained the first shot - his 28th consecutive successful free throw - before missing the second long off the rim. But one was enough render meaningless Chris Smith's follow-up trey at the buzzer.
The win lifted UAA out of last place in the league, half a game ahead of Saint Martin's heading into the final weekend.
Arts had 10 points (3-10 FG, 4-4 FT) and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, Adam Fitt-Chappell chipped in nine points, and James Hartman, Marcus Robinson, Cooper and Bryan Freshwater all finished with eight points to complete the scoring. Hartman came up with nine rebounds as well.
Drake's four three-pointers left him one shy of tying Jim Hajdukovich (238 from 1995-99) for UAA's career treys made record, while his 10-of-11 free throw shooting improved his current school-record percentage (.881). The 6-1 guard also had five assists and zero turnovers while playing 35 minutes.
UAA improved its all-time record against the Nanooks to 56-26, including 33-5 in Anchorage.
With 1,145 career points, Drake has a chance to move into seventh place on UAA's all-time scoring list in the final two games, Thursday at Humboldt State (7 p.m. AST) and Saturday at Western Oregon (6:30 p.m.). Both games can be heard live in Anchorage on AM-550 KTZN "The Zone" or over the internet on this site.
