Seawolves bounce Kangaroos behind hot shooters

ANCHORAGE ? McCade Olsen and Eric Draper scored 19 points each and point guard Luke Cooper rewrote the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout record book with 16 assists Friday to lead host Alaska Anchorage to a 77-70 victory over Missouri-Kansas City in the consolation semifinals.

UAA (5-1) also got 11 points from freshman Trenton Millar off the bench as the Seawolf reserves outscored their counterparts 38-12. UMKC (2-3) was led by a tournament-high 28 points from guard Quinton Day.

The Seawolves ? who captured their 46th all-time victory over a Division I team ? jumped on the Kangaroos early with a 15-2 run that made it 24-10 after 10 minutes, and Division II UAA took a 42-29 lead into the locker room after Carl Arts (9 pts, 8 rebounds) knocked down a three-pointer in the half's waning seconds.

UMKC, which also got 12 points from forward Brent Stephens, cut its deficit to six points on three occasions in the second half, but each time Olsen was there to answer. The 6-8 junior transfer was a perfect 6 of 6 in the final 20 minutes and finished 9 of 11 for the game.

Meanwhile Cooper protected the ball (1 turnover) and the pace for the Seawolves as he smashed the Shootout's single-game assist record (13 by Stanford's Brevin Knight vs. UAA, 1996) and tied UAA's school mark (Bryson Vaughan at Western Oregon, 2001).

UAA shot 51 percent (24-47) from the field, including 11 of 23 on three-pointers. Draper led the way from distance with 5-of-12 trey shooting and tied his career-high with eight rebounds.

UMKC's Day made 6 of 12 from long distance, but the rest of the Kangaroos managed to shoot only 2 of 16 beyond the arc.

The win was UAA's 28th all-time in 29 Shootouts and improves its record to 6-8 in the last five tourneys.

The Seawolves will play the winner of Hofstra-Marshall at 2 p.m. in Saturday's 4th/6th-place contest, while UMKC will face the loser of that game at noon for 7th place.
