ANCHORAGE ? Chris Bryant poured in 23 points to lead four Alaska Anchorage players in double figures as the Seawolves raced to a 71-45 men's basketball win over Ferris State in the AT&T Alascom Jamboree at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Friday.
The Seawolves (8-3) also got 16 points from Carl Arts, 12 points and eight rebounds from McCade Olsen and 11 points from Cameron Burney as they won their sixth in a row.
FSU (3-8) dropped its sixth straight game, all on the road, despite a solid 10-point, 7-rebound effort from center Justin Keenan.
The Bulldogs, of Big Rapids, Mich., feature a squad with nine true freshmen, while the Seawolves start four seniors and a junior. UAA used its experience to pull away early, taking a 14-5 lead. Burney scored eight straight points in a minute and half to give UAA a 34-19 advantage, and the Bulldogs never crept within single digits again.
Junior center Jeremiah Trueman grabbed a season-high nine rebounds, while freshman Kevin White had a season-high four assists and no turnovers on a night when senior point guard Luke Cooper had a rare sloppy performance (3 assists, 4 turnovers).
Burney, a junior from Steamboat Springs, Colo., grabbed a career-best five steals, equaling UAA's best individual mark this year. Bryant, meanwhile, was effective from all over the court, shooting 9 of 17 overall and 5 of 11 from three-point range. The senior from Metlakatla also had four rebounds and a pair of assists.
In the first game of the Jamboree, Gulf South Conference power Christian Brothers pulled away for an easy 77-60 win over Alaska Fairbanks.
Forward Kevin Weybright led the Pirates (6-4), of Memphis, Tenn., with 21 points, while center Nick Kohs earned Player of the Game honors with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
UAF (3-5) got 18 points from forward Kevin Atkins and 16 points from forward Colin Matteson in the loss.
The Seawolves and Nanooks will switch opponents Saturday, with the UAF-FSU tilt tipping at 5 p.m. AST and the UAA-CBU game beginning at approximately 7 p.m.
