ANCHORAGE ? Forward Lucas Alves and Jermaine Odjegba scored 16 points apiece as 7th-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii used a late rally Friday to knock off 2nd-seeded Cal State San Bernardino 67-63 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball West Region Championships at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Alves also had 10 points for the Seasiders (19-7), who will face Pacific West Conference rival Chaminade in Saturday's 5 p.m. ADT semifinal.
Guard Marlon Pierce scored 13 points and back-court mate Lance Ortiz scored 11 for defending region champ CSUSB (22-8).
Ortiz hit a three-pointer to put the Coyotes up 55-53 with 4:15 remaining, and center Michael Earl added a free throw 30 seconds later to put the California Collegiate Athletic Association co-champs up by three.
But the Seasiders got a rebound put-back from Odjegba and a fast-break layin from Jeremy Brown to start an 8-0 run and put the underdogs ahead for good. Ortiz's trey with 52 seconds left made it 63-62, however that was as close as the Coyotes would get.
BYUH sealed the game from the free throw line as point guard Corey Nielson sank a pair with 11 seconds left to account for the final margin.
CSUSB came into the game ranked No. 14 in the NABC Div. II top 25 poll, the second-highest ranked team in the regional behind host Alaska Anchorage (No. 4). Chaminade is ranked No. 25.
The Seasiders, the runner-up in the Pac West, went 0-3 against their Oahu rivals from Chaminade in the regular season, with all three games coming down to the wire.
