Wildcats topple Seawolves in 1st round

ANCHORAGE – Junior center Taylor Rohde scored a game-high 19 points, but it was not enough Thursday as host Alaska Anchorage suffered an 86-54 loss to Weber State in the final first-round game of the 2010 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

The Wildcats (2-2) were led by 14 points apiece from guard Lindsey Hughey and reserve forward Byron Fulton to advance to Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal against Arizona State.

The Seawolves (1-3) got 12 points from junior guard Mario Gill and a career-high-tying nine points from junior point guard Steve White in the loss, which drops them into Friday's 2 p.m. consolation semifinal against Houston Baptist.

The two-time defending Big Sky Conference champions from Ogden, Utah, never trailed as they jumped to an early 7-0 lead. Hughey played a near-flawless game, shooting 5 of 6 from the floor (2-3 3FGs), making both of his free throws, and adding eight rebounds, five assists and one steal with no turnovers.

Fulton, meanwhile, shot 7 of 10 to help the Wildcats to a 39-10 advantage in bench scoring.

Gill led the Division II Seawolves with six rebounds, while White and senior point guard Drew Robinson dished three assists apiece.
