Seawolves dismantle Wildcats, 99-62

ANCHORAGE – Senior center Taylor Rohde scored 27 points and sophomore guard Kyle Fossman added 17 points and five assists Thursday as 20th-ranked Alaska Anchorage rolled to its eighth straight win with a 99-62 blowout of defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

In a rematch of last year's GNAC men's basketball tournament title game – won 84-73 by the Wildcats –  the Seawolves turned the tables, taking an early 12-2 lead and hardly looking back. After CWU sliced its deficit to 16-11, UAA answered with nine straight points and led by double figures throughout.

The 37-point final margin was the largest for either team in 25 all-time meetings and marked the Wildcats' worst loss since a 114-75 setback against Chaminade on Jan. 30, 1999.

UAA (8-2, 2-0 GNAC), picked narrowly to win the league in this year's preseason coaches' poll, shot 58 percent (34 of 59) from the field and outrebounded CWU 44-23. Led by 10-of-13 shooting from Rohde, the Seawolves' starters combined to outscore their counterparts 78-39.

CWU (7-4, 1-2) was led by 20 points and five rebounds from sophomore guard Lacy Haddock.

In addition to Rohde's big night, the Seawolves got other solid performances from Fossman (6-10 FG, 3-6 3FG), sophomore guard Travis Thompson (14 points, 7 assists, 4-6 FG, 2-3 3FG, 4-5 FT) and senior point guard Steve White (10 points, 6 assists, 3-5 FG).

Meanwhile, sophomore guard Colton Lauwers barely missed his first career double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. The former Dimond High star and recent transfer from Adams State also had three assists, two steals and no turnovers.

All 10 Seawolves found the scoring column as reserve guard Marcus Jackson added eight points and six rebounds, and junior forward Abebe Demissie returned to the lineup with four points and seven rebounds after missing the last three games with a calf strain.

UAA shot 63 percent from the field and a perfect 14-of-14 at the free-throw line in building its 54-33 halftime lead.

The Seawolves will put their 11-game WFSC winning streak on the line Saturday when they end the calendar year with a 3 p.m. AST tip-off against Northwest Nazarene (7-4, 1-2).
